There are 2 types of solar regulators on the market – shunt and series regulators. When a battery reaches the correct voltage, shunt regulators bypass the battery by shunting the current. This generates heat, which requires a heat sink, but with low power systems this is not an issue. Series regulators disconnect the solar panel and so generate significantly less heat. Because they may be more complex, they are generally a little more expensive than shunt regulators.
For 4x4 and outdoor leisure use, either type of regulator will work perfectly well so rather select a solar regulator based on features and price.
